Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (c.1405–1468) is the supreme national hero of Albania — a 15th-century nobleman who unified Albanian tribes and held off the Ottoman Empire at the height of its military power for 25 unbroken years.

Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu (rreth 1405–1468) është heroi kombëtar suprem i Shqipërisë — një fisnik i shekullit XV i cili bashkoi fiset shqiptare dhe mbajti larg Perandorinë Osmane për 25 vjet të pandërprera.

Taken as a child hostage to the Ottoman court, he rose through their military ranks before defecting in 1443 to liberate his homeland. On 2 March 1444, he founded the League of Lezhë — Albania's first political-military alliance — and was elected Captain General. He never lost a major battle.

Nestled at 850 metres altitude in southeastern Albania, Korçë is unlike any other Albanian city. Known as "Little Paris of Albania" and the "City of Serenades", its cobblestoned kalldrëm streets once rang nightly with men singing love ballads from balconies — a tradition that gave the city its soul.

On 7 March 1887, Korçë made history when Pandeli Sotiri opened Mësonjëtorja — the first school to teach in the Albanian language anywhere in the world. That date is why 7 March is celebrated as Teacher's Day across all of Albania.

During the French military occupation (1916–1920), Korçë became the seat of the Autonomous Albanian Republic, where Albanian and French were co-official languages and over 200 Albanian schools opened — a cultural revolution in a city already centuries ahead of its time.

Home to Albania's oldest and most beloved brewery — Birra Korçë, est. 1928 — the city's spirit is one of refinement, resilience, and pride. A city of only 75,000 people that somehow produced the most internationally accomplished football club in Albanian history.

Më 7 Mars 1887, Korça bëri historinë kur Pandeli Sotiri hapi Mësonjëtoren — shkollën e parë që mësonte në gjuhën shqipe kudo në botë. Kjo datë është arsyeja pse 7 Marsi festohet si Dita e Mësuesit në të gjithë Shqipërinë.

Gjatë pushtimit ushtarak francez (1916–1920), Korça u bë selia e Republikës Autonome Shqiptare, ku shqipja dhe frëngjishtja ishin gjuhë zyrtare dhe u hapën mbi 200 shkolla shqipe.

Shtëpi e birrës më të vjetër dhe më të dashur të Shqipërisë — Birra Korçë, themeluar 1928 — shpirti i qytetit është i rafinuar, i qëndrueshëm dhe krenar. Një qytet me vetëm 75,000 banorë që prodhoi klubin më të realizuar ndërkombëtarisht në historinë e futbollit shqiptar.

In 2015–16, KF Skënderbeu became the first Albanian club in history to compete in a UEFA group stage — dropped into the Europa League after reaching the Champions League play-off round. They repeated this achievement in 2017–18. No other Albanian club — not KF Tirana with 26 titles, not Partizani, not Vllaznia — has ever reached a UEFA group stage.
